Township Association Stands Firm in its Opposition to State Police Fees for Municipalities

In response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s June 11 press conference, where he supported levying a fee on municipalities that rely on the Pennsylvania State Police for coverage, David M. Sanko, executive director of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, has released the following statement.***
“All Pennsylvania residents pay state income tax to access State Police services. No one should be forced to pay twice. In fact, instead of looking for ways to collect more money, let’s look at some ways to control costs. Period.

“Because the real crux of the issue is that local police services are prohibitively expensive. This is a direct result of collective bargaining and pension mandates from the state that inflate these costs beyond the reach of most communities, even those with a solid tax base. Rather than adding to the list of mandates – as HB 959 and SB 741 and their dear departed brethren have proposed – lawmakers should focus on making policing affordable for all communities, including those that have and need local police but are struggling under the financial burden to the point of becoming distressed.

“The Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors does not support charging municipalities a fee for State Police coverage.”

Exactly correct. At one time they wanted to impose a $25.00 fee per person in each municipality. For a township with 1000 population, that's $25,000.00/year. Why doesn't the dumb Democrat take it out of the gas tax, which is one of the highest in the nation, while MUNICIPALITY'S struggle to fix these crappy roads as it is.

The State Police are already dipping into other State Agencies Funds....... from what I've read....when will they control their own costs?? New buildings??? WOW

Totally agree. Im sure no community asked to have police coverage especially when in pa there are so many laws and restrictions. Must have car registration. Why cant your title of the car be proof of ownership, we must have insurance to protect those who always drive drunk and cause wrecks. We must have a strict inspection on cars god forbid you got a rust hole or something minor. Then when people get fined its not just a minor warning or 50 buck fine. Cause judges, ems, penndot etc fees get added so we pay 150 to 300 fines. Where does this money go. Surely not on roads. Surely not in police funds if we now got to pay fir them to come annoy and fine us. But yet we can afford all new state police cruisers so they grey color is harder to spit a cruiser up the road. Like we needed this for real? Thats why they want us to pay, its for the all new cruisers they bought. And what about these million dollar log and brick cabin luxury police barracks. My office is a cheap tin and plywood room. Then every 10 years the barracks must relocate either to avoud paying taxes on it or the deputy's office window outside is boring now and needs a new change. Got state parole agents who make shit up to put non crime offebders back in prisons. They lie to family and their bosses because they are all too fat and lazy to do their jobs. Then we got welfare offices that lie and dont answer phones. Penndot where 20 guys act as road barricades standing around a hole with shovels holding their lazy bodies up right. Lovely state us hard working people must have to pay for. Why dont the state employees take a nice big pay cut or go do a real mans job and actually earn your money instead of forcing by law your citizens to pay your bills. Feeling disgusted here.....

The argument is paying twice. So since I live in a borough I guess I am paying twice. The issue is that to pay for the state police, gas tax money is used, and that means the PA roads are not being fixed. Maybe the answer should lie within the size of the township and its tax base? For instance Loyalsock Township in Lycoming County has a large commercial base, large population and no police force.

Most of our local townships are barely able to keep their heads above water without this added expense. Also, most of the area roads which need repair are Penndot maintained roads. It is time to get these repairs done!

New Building are not a factor, they are built by private owners and then rented to PSP. However some of the spending in recent years is certainly questionable a best, such as the fiasco with Centralized Dispatching and a Radio System that has been troublesome since day one and we're talking Hundreds of Millions of Dollars here, possibly in excess of a Billion or more.

That's becuz townships ate too lazy to fix anything that might have a minor issue with whatever it maybe...instead they spend tons of money that's not needed...for example a truck needed an air filter...3 dudes supposidly checked the air filter and said that wasn't the issue...they bought a new truck...we bought the truck that was supposidly junk...low n behold all it needed was an air filter so we got a 4yr old truck in awesome condition for $500! Because ppl don't want to take the time to fix anything so they spend money on new trucks, chippers, or whatever they need..n still do absolutely nothing all day while these towns look like shit becuz 3 men ride around together all day long n not do one thing n get paid good money! Makes me sick

The state doesn't build new buildings. They lease all state police barracks, new, old, or falling apart.

They lease. They move. They lease they move. New buildings are in fact constructed FOR them. Ridiculous.

Then run for supervisor. Put your money where your mouth is. Instead of talking crap about the townships, join in and make a difference. I think you will see that what you think are facts are in fact not.

WOW 9:45, wherever your from, you better run for Supervisor the next time the position is up for election, with the energy you have coming from your mouth, you might be able to get some work done yourself & Dave your Township some money !!!

There’s a lot of anger and bad grammar in these posts.

Rule#1. State and state police do whatever they want to. Rule#2. Read rule number 1

I agree with you. The ppl who live in places that have a local police force are already 'paying twice'. There needs to be some way of spreading the cost of the extra state police services provided in the absence of local authorities.

Keep on electing democrats to run PA and the USA. They'll end up with all your money eventually and controlling EVERY aspect of our lives right up until the complete collapse of America.

FYI downward ginger and anonymous they are facts because I lived it!! If I were supervisor guarantee you would see a difference in my town because I would not tolerate laziness! These men get paid good money so therefore they need to earn it instead of using tax payers money for nothing to get done! They are an embarrassment and would not have jobs if I were their boss!! So u 2 must be lazy to think it's ok to not do the job they get paid to do!! Go to work, get done what ur told, and earn that days pay. Laziness is 100% unacceptable at work!!

That’s a mega AMEN 9:05 am !!!! We certainly do not need their socialism !!!!! Mercy !!!! Mercy !!! Mercy !!!! These people that have nothing but negativity to say about their township supervisors need to “shut up” or “put up “ !!!! If they think they can do better, ya all need to run the next time your Supervisors position is open !!!!

OOORRRR you could do like smethport does, and hold traffic court in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, so no working person can come dispute their bullshit tickets. A friend was turkey hunting in the area, and found some pigturds beer can, so he picked it up and threw it in the back of his truck to take it to the trash, was pulled over and got an open container ticket... the man doesn't even drink. now he's got to take a day off work and travel to "methport" for court, bet it costs him double.

Wow, I sure hope he isn’t fined, I guess I better be more careful myself picking up people’s flippin trash they throw out especially their flippin beer cans, well I pray they show respect to this man for doing a good deed & show him mercy !!! It’s sad how these pigs get away with throwing their stinking filthy trash out !!!
