THINK ABOUT IT!!

Thoughts
by
Pastor B.J. Knefley

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Philippians 4:8

What do you think about? What does your mind dwell upon? Are there thoughts or memories that you’d like to not think about? I’m sure that each of us has our own stories to tell about what is packed away in our minds that we’d like to get rid of.
I read an article recently that said we can reprogram the pathways in our minds. The reason that we don’t is because we tend to rehearse the same pathways and they ultimately become ruts. In other words, if we could learn how not to go down some of those roads in our minds, we can learn new ways of thinking. That’s the heart of what Paul is saying to the Philippians, but it’s something that we must choose to do. Notice he says to “fix your thoughts”, which is about training your thoughts to focus on what’s “true”, not what’s negative and degrading. He’s saying to fix your thoughts upon those things that will build you up and not tear you down. Things that are encouraging, and not discouraging. Sometimes this will mean to learn to look at events in a different light. For example, that may mean to see things as happening for us rather than to us. To stop seeing things as a victim, but rather as a victor.

Sometimes the things we feed our mind and the mind of our children is part of the problem. Movies, television, and even the news portray stories that aren’t fit for the minds consumption. Yet, we saturate our minds with stuff anyway because it’s “entertainment” and then wonder why we can’t sleep at night or why our minds dwell on such negative and fearful things.

Perhaps the person that you are is the result of what you’ve allowed your mind to be fed with. Think about it.
