The Allegheny Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) announces the winners of its fall Bird Dog Challenge run at the Rolfe Beagle Club in Johnsonburg, Elk County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, September 7, 2019. Dogs were placed and scored in either flushing or pointing categories. Entries were not to exceed 14 dogs in order to maintain a quality hunt for all handlers and dogs.

The event was run by Mason Walters of Wilcox, and Tommy Launer of St. Marys, Elk County.

Flushers: 1st - Charleigh, Yellow Labrador Retriever, owned by Josh Peters of Shippenville; 2nd – Asher, English Springer Spaniel, owned by Dottie Maslonek of Cecil; and 3rd – Bruce, Springer Spaniel, owned Pat Rondomanski of State College.

Pointers: 1st - Knight, Weimariner, owned by Howard Olay of Kersey;

2nd – Megan, Brittany, owned by Jared Shaffer of St. Marys;

3rd - June, German Short-haired Pointer, owned by Derek Carlson of Mt. Jewett;

4th - Lincoln, Vizla, owned by Dick McDoewell of Bradford; and

5th - Allie, Brittany, owned by Chad Frantz of Bradford.

Lion Country Supply of Port Matilda donated some prizes, and some prizes were purchased from Lion Country Supply. The prizes consisted of Ruffland “Water Holes”, Champion Bio Clay Targets, hats, t-shirts, and dog water bottles.

Mix’s Game Birds of Kane, Pa. provided the chukars for the challenge.

The scorers were Tommy Launer of St. Marys, and Mason Walters of Wilcox. The “stagers” (scorers’ assistants) were Frank and Bill Zore.

Bird boys and girls were Garrett Balon, Meg Yeager, and Zane Carlson.

Jeff Yeager and JoAnn Schiafone donated the use of UTVs for the bird boys and girls.

Mary Hosmer and Joann Schiafone provided lunch.

The RGS Allegheny Chapter’s Bird Dog Challenges are meant to be fun and do not require AKC or NAVHDA registrations or certifications.

The next RGS Bird Dog Challenge will be held early May 2020, at the running grounds at the Rolfe Beagle Club, 1016 Long Level Rd, Johnsonburg, Pa. All previous dog owners that registered for any previous challenges will receive advance emails notifying them of the next event. Attendance for the spring challenge will be limited to 20 dogs.

The Ruffed Grouse Society was founded in 1961 to promote and increase awareness of young forest management and to maintain suitable habitat that supports healthy populations of ruffed grouse, woodcock, deer and many songbird species that depend on forest diversity to survive and prosper.
