SCAM ALERT: Penelec warns of 'different' phone scam

by WJAC Staff

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Another day, another scam.

Penelec officials are warning of a phone scam making its way through Cambria County that’s a little different than previous scams.

Penelec spokesperson Todd Meyers says that while previous scams involved customers being told they’ve missed payments, this new scam tells customers that they’ve paid their bill too early or have overpaid.

Meyers says the scammers ask customers for their electric account information, along with their bank routing information and their credit or debit card numbers so they can be refunded.

“There’s a bunch of red flags that ought to be waving by this point, no matter how nice it is to hear that there might be some money coming to you,” says Meyers. “A, Penelec has all of your account info, so there’s no reason for us to ask for it. Secondly, we would never ask for things over the phone such as credit card numbers, bank routing numbers, anything that’s sensitive, personal information, we would never ask for that.”

The Jackson Township Police Department says it's received calls from multiple business regarding the scam calls and is investigating.

In the meantime, Meyers says if you have any doubts that you are talking to a Penelec representative, you should hang up and call Penelec yourself, just to be safe.

How dumb do you have to be to still be getting scammed on the phone?. If anyone calls you with concerns about any account you have. Simply hang up and call the number you useally use to communicate with that company and explain the call you just received. If it was a legitimate call they will inform you then.
