Eugene Jones "Gene" Pope, 93, formerly of Galeton, PA

Eugene Jones Pope

Eugene Jones "Gene" Pope, formerly of Galeton, PA graduated into eternal rest and peace on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, TX.

Gene was born near Waverly, OH on October 20, 1926, to Anthony Porter Pope and Eulah Chaffin Clarissa Jones Pope. Gene grew up in the rolling hills near Waverly, in southern OH, and graduated from North High School in Columbus, OH, in 1944.

During his working years, he worked in Washington, D.C.; New Orleans, LA; Guatemala; San Antonio, TX; Houston, TX; New York, NY; Atlanta, GA; and Los Angeles, CA. Most of his employment was with Texaco, Inc. from which he retired in 1984 after 30 years of service. After retirement, he relocated first to Arcata, CA before returning to Texas in 1994, settling in the small city of Kerrville.

Gene volunteered in several different places while living in Kerrville, including the Cowboy Artists of America Museum (now called the Museum of Western Art), the Symphony of the Hills, Playhouse 2000, the Point Theater, Peterson Regional Medical Center, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Gene was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his son, David Pope, of Kerrville, TX and his daughter, Marguerite (Michael, Sr.) Stirnaman, of Galeton, PA, two grandchildren, Michael (Jr.) (Elizabeth) Stirnaman of Galeton, PA, and Kathleen Stirnaman of Galeton, PA. Gene is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Parker Burrous-Stirnaman and Scottlyn Stirnaman, both of Galeton, PA and Allison Bellinger of Wellsboro, PA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. 


Gene was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law Edith Naomi Pope Stiebritz and Ernest Stiebritz; and his brother and sister-in-law Ralph Lewis Pope and Denise Pope.

Memorial services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kerrville, TX March 5, 2020.
