This is sad. I had the pleasure of speaking with Betty just a few times. She was a good and tough ol'bird.

When I was a kid, the Garloff's were best known for their rows upon rows of cut, split, and stacked firewood. The conversations we had, she was proud of being "like the guys" in the sense that she could do the things they did. Like cut wood, change the oil in an automobile, take care of farm animals, change a tire, etc.

She joked that her husband used to say, "You should've been a guy." To which she laughed when recalling his words.

I spoke with her last about a month ago. Although in great spirits, she was most disappointed in the inevitable fact that her mind told her she could still do the things needed done but her body couldn't keep up. Saying,"I can still do things...just a little slower these days." To which she laughed.

She referred to herself as a "simple ol'country girl" and took pride in that.

For Betty, the few times we spoke could understandably be filed in the "Misc" section and forgotten. Just a pleasant and polite encounter with another person.

For me and although she'd be a bit younger...she invoked thoughts of my grandparents and their generation. People I sorely miss, who had a profound influence on me, who loved, and cherished the family they created. They too reveled and took pride in...being "simple country folk".

Thank you Betty and rest in peace.
