McKean County District Attorney Re: Anniversary of 911 Attacks

OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY

STEPHANIE L. VETTENBURG-SHAFFER DISTRICT ATTORNEY

MCKEAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE

500 W MAIN STREET, SMETHPORT, PA 16749

PRESS RELEASE

From: Stephanie L. Vettenburg-Shaffer,

On this sad anniversary, we remember the nearly 3,000 firefighters, law enforcement officers, military personnel, other first responders and innocent civilians who perished inside the buildings, on the ground, and inside the planes at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

These extraordinary citizens protected our country and sacrificed themselves to save others.

Since that day, thousands of other victims have succumbed to illness caused by the toxic fumes from the attacks.

On that morning, some died while trapped in their offices or airplanes. Others died who, even though they were in a location of relative safety, rushed inside to save lives.

The cumulative efforts of these first responders, victims and survivors continue to shine as a symbol of patriotism and heroism.

Our country was rebuilt on their memories and on the efforts of those who flooded the attacked areas in the next few days to provide assistance- including Limestone resident Bob Rinfrette and his cadaver dog, Buddy, who searched for victims in the debris from the World Trade Center. And our faith was restored by the overwhelming pride we felt.

In their memories, we vow that we will never forget.

Every day, our local first responders risk their lives; and their families share them with us. With each call and with each conflict, they risk their lives for us.

On behalf of the McKean County District Attorney’s Office, we humbly express our gratitude to our local firefighters, law enforcement officers, members of the military, other first responders and their families; and we express our gratitude and our vow to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives that were lost on September 11.

I'm not from McKean County, but I applaud your words and sentiments as an American, period.

I'll never forget when this happened. Our daughter just started kindergarten and we were petrified. We couldn't wrap our heads around what was heppening. Instinct said "go get her" and bring her home and that is what we did. What happened within the United States was absolutely amazing-We all came together and were united in our resolve to fight to the finish. We were not going to sit back and let such a thing happen! Now, we can't wrap our heads around what is happening in the USA. We ARE ALL together in everything. PERIOD!
