Securing The $121.00 Divorce

 PA Family Law

In the last few days, I have worked with another attorney to try to bring a peaceful end to a very brief marriage.  In the space of a couple weeks, we identified what was left of the “ties that bind” and how to painlessly sever things like joint leases, joint debts and dividing the wedding presents.

The clients are not wealthy and cost is a consideration.  Because this would or should be a quick divorce and the financials seemed under control by the agreement we crafted, I thought it might make sense for the client to use a low price divorce “mill” to file the divorce complaint and secure the decree ending the marriage.

In my home county, a simple one count divorce complaint costs just over $200 in filing fees. Each county gets to impose its own fees and the disparity can be fairly big.  There are two rural Pennsylvania counties: Cameron and Potter that have made quick divorce a kind of cottage industry.  In most counties, there are two marriages for each divorce.  In 2019, Cameron and Potter Counties each had 53 divorces for each marriage celebrated.  Even Las Vegas would blush.

Back to the cost.  The instant I looked to see what was available for in terms of low cost divorces, my computer exploded with advertisements.  A day later, I can’t go onto the web without being dogged by lawyers and “services” offering me a divorce for as little at $121.00.

Potter County will take $88 to file a divorce. Read more....

This is a racket the counties are running to make money only. The judges should end this now. But prothonotary brags about it in Potter county, but the tax payers are rooting the bill for all the extra employees. Commissioners need to take a good look at this!!!

In 2019, Cameron and Potter Counties each had 53 divorces for each marriage celebrated. This ratio helps explain the problems in education, day to day life and the deterioration of all the wonderful towns thru this area.

Most of them are scams...I paid well over $1,000.00 for what was supposed to be a $178.00 divorce. NOTHING was ever filed anywhere & the "law firm" had no record of anything (thank God for cancelled checks/bank statements). We both assumed for over 10 years that we were divorced...Surprise!! I had to refile and pay again.

I have never understood, why it only takes one person to marry a couple, but a pack of lawyers and judges to get a divorce??? Talk about a backward system...

As much as I hate being the voice of dissent, I have used the Potter county divorce system, and everything went flawlessly. If you are going to use this system, be prepared to do some of the legwork yourself though.

Learn the facts before you post negative comments about the divorces being processed in Potter County. The amount of revenue being generated helps to keep your taxes from increasing fellow Potter County tax payers. Also as to the comments about the amount of staff in the Prothonotary's office.....come sit and observe just a few hours with us. We would love to show you just how busy we actually are and how hard we try to keep everything moving to process not only divorces...but criminal, civil, orphans' court, and all of the other miscellaneous divisions handled in this 1 office. Get your facts straight before giving us a bad review.
