Reader Reports Possible Scam Using Local's Name

 Hi Jim,

I think this should be posted as to this scam. I received an email that was supposed to be from Wendee Brown ( Kaytees).

It wanted to know if I could help her out. I responded that I could.

What it turned out to be was someone using her name and asking me to buy gift cards for her and she would get me the money!

I have tried to call Wendee, but the calls don't go thru.

The email has Wendee's name and the email address used was brownbagger66@live.com.

i think it is very cruel to try to capitalize on someone's misforture, such as a business fire. Heartless might be a better term. Shame on them!

We had this happen also , around Christmas time. Asking us to buy JCP/Sephora Gift cards in the amount of $150for this persons niece as a gift because supposedly their amazon account was not working? , we would be reimbursed. This was from an acquaintance.....not someone we know well enough to do this for? I responded yes we had accounts, but when they asked to do this....we did not respond.
Definitely a SCAM!!!

Any E-mail asking for gift cards or "top off" cards for prepaid debit is 99% likely to be a scam.

If it has an E-mail address of someone familiar to you, then most likely that person's computer has been compromised by a virus, which is generating these spam E-mails to addresses in their contact list.

If you receive an E-mail like that do not respond, but send it to local law enforcement.
