KNOXVILLE— "We are hoping this year's benefit will be even bigger than 2019's," said Jerry Gaye who with his wife Helen have been hosting the benefit for seven years to help shelter dogs and cats in Tioga County that need homes.

The couple is asking people to contribute items for the silent auction and yard sale or money or items for the dogs and cats at the Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries Heading Home Center at 725 Gee Road, Tioga, Pa.

"The Heading Home Center has guaranteed that 100 percent of the funds we provide will benefit the animals," Jerry said.

Items for the Chinese auction and yard sale can be dropped off at the Knoxville VFW or Blend's Feed and Farm Supply.

Each year, the benefit has grown in popularity. The first four benefits were held at Willie's Bar & Grill in Osceola. The benefit was moved to the Knoxville VFW in 2018 to accommodate more people. It is being held there for the third time this year.

"People who attend the benefit on Saturday, Oct, 23 at noon at the Knoxville VFW at 703 Boatman Road in Knoxville, Pa. 16928 are welcome to donate money to help the Second Chance Heading Home Center or bring a bag of dog or cat food or cleaning supplies," said Jerry. "There will not be an admission or cover charge to attend the benefit."

The Chinese auction and yard sale will begin at noon on Oct. 23 with lots of items available. "We will have a wide selection of donated items from people who want to help and regional and local businesses. Among them will be gift cards, jewelry, toys, clothing, dishes, bakeware, grills, tools, etc. Auction tickets will be available for people to place with the items they want to win," Gaye said.  The yard sale will include furniture, planters, bar stools and bar tops, all handmade from logs.

The Blue Country Roots band, also known as The Over The Hill Gang, will perform bluegrass music starting at noon. "As music and animal lovers, we formed our band in November of 2016 at the request of our big-hearted friend, Jerry Gaye to help make this annual benefit a huge success," said Diane Brownell. A professional artist, Brownell plays five-string banjo and sings with the band. "Jerry has been donating his musical talent for many years to help animals,'" Brownell added. Gaye plays Dobro and five-string banjo.

The proceeds from the 2017, 2018 and 2019 benefits were donated to Second Chance's Heading Home Center and will be again this year. The benefit was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19. The money raised through the benefit in 2014, 2015 and 2016 was donated to Animal Care Sanctuary in Wellsboro.
