John “Jack” Barr, 79, of Port Allegany PA

John “Jack” Barr

John “Jack” Barr, 79, of Port Allegany PA passed away Tuesday August 24th at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo following a brief illness.

Jack was born January 10, 1942 in Quakertown PA to the late John T and Betty Tyson Barr.  He is survived by his son J. Paul (Penny)Barr of Sunset, SC with son Kirt (Lindsey) Barr and daughter Janelle Barr; daughter Sharon (Jim) Cosgrove of Elmira Heights, NY with sons Jared and Josh Cosgrove; great-grandchildren Madison, Nolan and Sloan Barr; brother and sister-in-law James and Kay Barr; sister June Pinnick; friend Anna Potter; along with nieces, nephews and many friends.

Jack was a graduate of Boyertown High School, Class of 1960.  He and his family moved to Port Allegany in 1976 to the farm that he loved always with horses and a beloved German Shepherd dog at his side.

He worked various jobs in his lifetime, including running his own business doing plumbing, heating and excavating.

His most recent position was supervisor of Annin Township.

Regardless of what his job was, he was always someone who could fix anything and was known for his uncanny ability to look at a plumbing issue and without hesitation, give an answer on how to fix it without measuring or directions.

His love of working with his hands never left him, he was often found out in his garage fixing a piece of equipment, helping out a neighbor or a friend, at an auction or out on the farm making hay for the animals that he loved.

When his kids were younger, they were actively involved in 4H and he would be found on the weekends taking them to the fairgrounds for the horse shows.  In recent years, he would travel to sporting events that his grandsons participated in, often would be in the Elmira Heights area watching Jared and Josh playing baseball and football.

A life celebration will be held on October 23, 2021 at the VFW in Port Allegany, PA from 6-8pm.  This is open to all friends who would like to come and share a story with family and friends.

Those who would like to honor Jack’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to your local animal shelter or the American Stroke Association.

Jack will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY
