Think About It

Pastor B.J. Knefley

I believe that it can be safely said that most people like a good mystery. Whether it’s a good book or a movie, we sit on the edge of our seat waiting to see how it’s going to end. Some of us play the slick detective and try to figure out the clues so we can solve the ‘who done it’ before the ending comes. Sometimes there are mysteries that just can’t be solved. Oh, we try and we speculate, but in the end we really don’t have a solid answer other than faith.

Take the Bible for example. Some believe that it was entirely written by men who invented God as a means to controlling people. Others believe that though men wrote it, it was done so under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Is it a mystery? Some would believe so, but that’s what faith is about, isn’t it?

In an interesting conversation recently my granddaughter’s husband shared with me that although he believed in God, he didn’t believe in the Bible because man wrote it. Later I asked him if when showing a house that he built to potential costumers did he describe the house as the house he built or his subcontractors built? He quickly stated that his subcontractors built as he directed so it was the house that he built. You can probably guess where I was going to take this, but he caught on quickly and said, “I get your point, I never thought about that way.”

The word mystery is used several times in the Bible. There are things that just can’t be explained or understood. That’s why we call it faith. Hebrews 11:1 simply states that “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Sadly, many want answers. They want perimeters and absolutes. They want things that are tangible. The mystery of faith can be all of that and more if we’d only allow ourselves to delve into its mystery. Think about it.

He grows on a lot of people....sort of like a wart. No matter how much faith you's a simple fact that the bible has been rewritten and misinterpreted by man for centuries.

There ARE some things in the Bible that are completely unfeasible, fictitious in my mind such as Noah's Ark for example. If EVERY species of animal life were to go on said boat/ship, only 0.2mm of space would be left. Jonah and the Whale, most whales are incapable of swallowing a human. Moses did NOT part the Red Sea, the drifting, and moving of the continents over billions of years have caused this, etc. Was Jesus real, absolutely! He is in many past cultures historical records, etc.
